Home Remedies for Head Lice

It’s a cycle that keeps coming back to us from time to time. We encounter it as kids and then, just when we feel we have come out of it, it comes back to us through our kids.

Wonder what we are talking about here? Head lice of course! Teeny weensy but incessantly annoying, these tiny parasites can make our life hell by kicking up a scratch fest every time they decide to inhabit our hair.

And what’s worse? They simply don’t show any signs of receding no matter what we do!

No more though! For we have finally narrowed down a list of sure-shot remedies that can help you get rid of head lice and nits once and for all.

Simple, easy to whip up and safe to use, these home remedies will have you taking the upper hand in the battle of humans vs. head lice as you force these pesky, blood sucking parasites out of their safe haven (your hair) and eradicate them.

But first, let’s take a look at some of the reasons you may get a head lice infestation along with some of the symptoms of the condition.

Causes for Head Lice

There is the general misconception that head lice thrive in untidy, unkempt hair. This is far from the truth!

There is really no perfect haven for head lice to grow and thrive in.

They get into your hair irrespective of whether it is clean or has not been washed for more than a week.

One of the main reasons for head lice infestation is direct contact which allows the head lice to move easily from one head to another.

This is a very possible scenario among school children who are usually the first individuals in the family to get head lice.

Sharing infected items like combs, towels, hats, blankets, pillows, clothes and even stuffed toys can also increase the risk of infestation.

Different Kinds of Lice

If you think the only kinds of lice out there are the ones that infest the hair, you are wrong. There are different kinds of head lice that can infest the other parts of the body as well and should not be confused with head lice. These include:

Body Lice: These live on clothes and bedding, moving onto human skin only when they want to feet. They are more prone to affect individuals who do not follow proper hygiene in terms of bathing every day or washing clothes.

Public Lice: These lice thrive in the hair on the private parts of the body. Sometimes, they are also known to infest chest hair as well as the eyebrows and eyelashes.

Symptoms of a Head Lice Infestation

The most common symptom of a head lice infestation is the incessant itchiness you feel on the scalp. You may also notice a tickling feeling as and when the head lice move on or through your hair.

The presence of nits or the eggs of head lice on the hair shafts as well as on clothing can also indicate a head lice infestation.

You may also find it difficult to sleep owing to the intense itching sensation on the scalp as head lice are known to be very active during night.

Continuous scratching can also cause small, reddish bumps or sores to develop on the scalp.

Why shouldn’t you use conventional medications for the treatment of head lice?

Your first reaction on noticing a head lice infestation on your head or on the head of a dear one would be to run to the pharmacy and get the best OTC hair tonic or lice removal lotion.

However, here’s a solid reason why you are better off NOT using these medications on your hair let alone your scalp.

Most if not all OTC medications for head lice contain neurotoxins which kill head lice by affecting their central nervous system.

Most of these neurotoxins can be found in garden pesticides and some of them have even been banned in several countries.

Imagine the effects of these neurotoxins on your scalp. Studies have related the exposure of some of these neurotoxins to conditions like skin rashes, asthma, respiratory illnesses, endocrine disorders, stiff neck, slurred speech, seizures, lethargy and even breast cancer.

Another reason you don’t need to opt for these OTC medications is that they don’t actually work to their full potential.

The lice on your head will eventually become immune to these neurotoxins and continue to live in your hair while you suffer silently from the side effects of these harmful substances.

Different Ways in Which You Can Remove Head Lice

Before diving into the different DIY remedies you can use to remove head lice, let’s take a look at the basic strategies in which lice can be removed from your hair.

All the remedies that follow will follow one of these strategies to eradicate head lice from your hair for good.

The Nit Comb Method: Probably the most common lice and nit removal method, this involves using a fine toothed comb to comb the hair immediately after a shower.

Nits that do not come with the comb can be removed with a device called a nitpicker.

The lice and nits are removed after a few tries with the comb and the nitpicker.

The Suffocation Method: This method is largely followed by many treatments for head lice infestation.

Most of the home remedies we are about to see for the problem also follow this method of first suffocating the lice and nits until they die and then removing them from the hair using a comb and a nitpicker.

Killing the lice and nits first prevents them from multiplying again after the treatment.

The Degreaser Method: This method focuses on destroying the lice and nit’s exoskeletons, thus killing them before removing them from the hair.

Home Remedies for Head Lice Infestation That Actually Work

We have finally arrived at the point where we start experimenting with home remedies to treat head lice infestation. Remember, it may take more than a few tries for a particular remedy to work.

And you may not find success with the very first remedy that you try out. Keep trying these remedies until you are able to find the one that works most efficiently for your hair type.

1. Coconut Oil for Head Lice

Let’s start with the most basic of ingredients that can work wonders on your hair while effectively removing all traces of lice and nits from it.

Coconut oil is by far, one of the most trusted home remedies for head lice infestation and can help you fight off the same in the following ways.

Method I: Coconut Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar

A mix of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar proves to be a potent weapon against head lice.

While the coconut oil will suffocate the lice and nits, and kill them, the apple cider vinegar will loosen their hold on the hair shafts, making it easier to remove them. You can also use apple cider vinegar if you are suffering from hair loss.

What you need:

  • Coconut Oil – 1 cup
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 cup

What you need to do:

  • Rinse your hair with the apple cider vinegar and allow it to dry completely.

  • If the lice and nits did not come out the first time you combed the hair, comb the hair again after washing it.
  • Follow this remedy twice or thrice a week to eradicate all lice and nits from your body.

Method II: Coconut Oil, Vinegar and Salt Spray

This method makes use of a DIY spray that is easier to apply when it comes to coating your hair and scalp with a substance to remove head lice.

Salt is also known to dehydrate the lice, thus killing them faster than other remedies that follow the suffocation method. So give it a try.

What you need:

  • Coconut Oil – 1 cup

  • Salt – ¼ cup

What you need to do:

  • Heat the vinegar until it becomes warm. Add the salt to it and continue to stir until the salt has completely dissolved in the vinegar.

  • Allow the mix to dry and work its magic on the lice.
  • After some time, apply coconut oil all over the scalp and hair and wait for an additional 8 hours.

Suffering from a head lice infestation? Here are some ways you can stop it using olive oil.
