How is an acne scar caused?
We know that an acne scar is a result of an inflamed follicle or pore beneath the skin’s surface that breaks.
However, let us take a closer look at how the scar actually forms on the skin.
When a puss filled pore swells up and breaks it creates a rupture in the follicle wall. Ruptures that occur near the skin surface cause minor acne scars that usually heal on their own within a week or so.
What we need to worry about are large sized lesions or pimples that cause a bigger rupture in the follicle wall.
When this happens, the infected material aka pus spills out of the pore onto the dermis, causing the healthy skin tissue to die.
This damage to the dermis is taken note of by the skin which starts to make extra collagen fibers (fibrous protein to boost skin health) to repair this damage.
However, in the case of serious lesions, the repair job doesn’t work out well and a scar is left back on the skin in the place where the follicle wall ruptured.

Other Guidelines to Follow when Treating Acne Scars
Now that we have seen quite a number of home remedies for treating acne scars, here are some general guidelines that would help in getting rid of the scars in a timely and hassle free manner.
Avoid Chemical Masks or Lotions: When it comes to treating acne scars, natural remedies are always best. Chemical masks or lotions can irritate your skin and cause more acne breakouts.
They can even make the scars more reddish in appearance, thus making them more noticeable in the process.
Treat acne in a timely manner: Acne eventually causes acne scars. In addition to treating acne scars, you will have to cure the underlying problem as well.
Use home remedies to treat acne as soon as you spot an outbreak. Consult a dermatologist to check for alternate treatments if the natural cures don’t work.
Do not squeeze, pick or pop a pimple: This is the last thing you want to do, especially if you want your skin to remain clear and without any scars.
Picking or prodding a pimple can cause the infection to spread further into the skin, worsening the damage done to the dermis.
Picking the scab can also delay the healing process of a pimple while increasing the chances of permanent scarring.
Do patch tests on all home remedies first: Your skin may be allergic to certain ingredients.
The best way to avoid more breakouts or rashes is to do a patch test on the skin first before applying the ingredient or remedy to the acne prone areas.
Always wash your hands before and after following the remedy: This reduces the chances of the infection spreading from your hands to other parts of your body.
Follow instructions carefully: As in the case of medications, ensure that you add the correct amount of each ingredient in a remedy as mentioned in the instructions.
Also ensure to follow a remedy only for the number of times it has been mentioned. Overdoing the remedy or over usage of the ingredients in it can worsen the scars instead of curing them.
Check with a doctor: You may have to check with a dermatologist for alternate treatments in case the home remedies do not work.
In cases where the scarring is severe, the doctor may recommend treatments like microdermabrasion and chemical peel, etc. to lessen the appearance of the scars.
Treatments like laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, fractional laser therapy and surgery are often recommended for severe scars.
